When Old Battles Resurface: A Lesson From the Trial

There’s a unique kind of discouragement that hits when something you thought you conquered comes back to the surface.

You’ve fasted. You’ve prayed. You’ve warred. You’ve been delivered. But then in a moment of weakness, in a quiet hour, or even during a high spiritual season — there it is again.

For me, it was lust.

I had believed it was over. That demon had been cast out. That door shut. But I found myself staring at the same temptation that I once thought had no more power over me. This wasn’t just a wandering thought — I physically felt something. My arm began to ache as if something spiritual was being shaken loose. I knew deep down… this wasn’t just flesh. Something was trying to leave — and it was angry about it.

Some people might dismiss that. Call it coincidence, or muscle tension, or emotional stress. But when you’ve been walking with Jesus for a while, you know when something spiritual is shifting. And in that moment, I wasn’t afraid — I was reminded.

Reminded that trials and tribulations don’t just come to crush us. They come to reveal what still needs to be healed, surrendered, and removed.

“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.”

—1 Peter 4:12

We often think the fire means failure. But in God’s kingdom, fire is refinement.

That resurfacing of lust wasn’t proof that I hadn’t been delivered — it was proof that the enemy was still trying to hold ground that no longer belongs to him. The ache in my arm wasn’t random. It was resistance. And when demons resist, it’s often because the power of the Holy Spirit is moving them out.

I had to remind myself: Jesus doesn’t set us free halfway.

But He does take us deeper.

Deliverance isn’t just a one-time event — it’s a journey of walking in holiness, of being transformed by the renewing of our mind, and of shutting the door every time the enemy tries to sneak back in.

And here’s the beauty of it all — God always provides a way out. Always.

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

—1 Corinthians 10:13

In every trial, in every tempting moment, there’s a path that leads to Him — a path out. But the real question is: do we want Him more than we want what’s tempting us? Do we love the way of escape more than the fleeting pleasure standing in our way?

That’s where the war really happens — in the heart.

Do I want Jesus more?

Because He always makes a way. But it’s on us to choose it.

So if you’re in a season where an old battle is resurfacing, don’t let shame win.

Don’t let the enemy twist it into condemnation.

Instead, let it be a moment to lean in deeper to Jesus.

Let it be an altar moment.

Let it be fuel for the fire of prayer and a reminder that the Holy Spirit isn’t done with you — He’s digging deeper, pulling out roots, and making room for glory.

Keep pressing in.

You’re not defeated — you’re being refined.

And every ache, every tear, every war in the Spirit is bringing you one step closer to the image of Christ.
