Praying in Tongues: A Gift You Can Use Anytime

One of the most common questions believers ask is: “Do I have to wait until I feel something before I can pray in tongues, or can I simply open my mouth in faith and speak?”

I believe Scripture is clear: once you have received the gift of tongues, you can pray in tongues at any time. It is not dependent on waiting for a sudden surge of emotion or a dramatic prompting. Like every gift of the Spirit, tongues is meant to be exercised by faith, in cooperation with the Holy Spirit.

You Speak, the Spirit Supplies

Acts 2:4 gives us the pattern: “They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Notice the two parts:

  • They began to speak. The disciples chose to open their mouths and form words.

  • The Spirit gave them utterance. The language itself came from the Spirit.

This shows us that tongues is not something the Spirit forces on us. It’s a partnership. We provide the willingness and the voice; He provides the language.

Praying in Tongues Is Under Your Control

Paul makes this very clear in 1 Corinthians 14:14–15:

“For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding.”

Paul says “I will.” That’s a choice. He could decide whether to pray in tongues or in his natural language. That means tongues isn’t something we’re helplessly waiting on — it’s a gift we can engage by faith whenever we choose.

And Jesus Himself affirms this principle in Matthew 9:29: “According to your faith let it be done to you.” Praying in tongues is no different — it flows not by feelings, but according to your faith.

Not About Feelings, But Faith

Too often, people hesitate because they’re waiting for a feeling — a tingling, a fire, or some overwhelming sensation. But tongues is not about chasing an experience. It’s about faith.

Jesus said in Mark 16:17: “These signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues.” He didn’t say it would come and go with emotion. He said it belongs to those who believe.

And here’s the encouragement: at the beginning, when you first start opening your mouth to pray in tongues, you may need to “pray through” before you feel anything. Don’t worry if it feels awkward or if your mind second-guesses what’s happening. That’s normal. The enemy knows how powerful this gift is, and he will do everything he can to limit you, distract you, or make you doubt. Keep pressing in. Over time, the flow becomes natural, and you’ll step into the strength and edification God designed tongues to release.

Why This Matters

  • For daily life: You don’t have to wait until Sunday or until you feel “spiritual” enough. You can build yourself up (Jude 20) and pray the mysteries of God (1 Corinthians 14:2) anytime.

  • For prayer: When you run out of words in English, you can instantly switch to tongues and let your spirit pray.

  • For warfare: Tongues is a weapon. You don’t have to wait until you’re overwhelmed; you can open your mouth and pray in the Spirit right in the moment of attack.

Living It Out

  • When you wake up, start the day by praying in tongues for a few minutes.

  • When you don’t know how to pray, open your mouth and let your spirit intercede.

  • When anxiety, temptation, or heaviness comes, don’t wait for a feeling — speak in tongues and release the Spirit’s power.

  • When doubts arise, keep going. Don’t stop because it feels small in the beginning. The Spirit is faithful to meet you in the step of faith.

Conclusion

Tongues is not something you wait on; it’s something you walk in. The Spirit has already given the gift. You don’t need to feel goosebumps or hear a voice telling you to start. By faith, you can open your mouth at any time and pray in tongues.

Remember Jesus’ words: “According to your faith let it be done to you” (Matthew 9:29). And when the enemy whispers lies to make you doubt, press through. Tongues is powerful, and the enemy knows it. The more you yield, the more you’ll experience the Spirit’s strength, clarity, and edification.
