How I Learned to Stop Running on Fumes and Start Walking in Freedom
There’s a war over the mind—over clarity, over peace, over sanity. Most people don’t see it because they’ve normalized chaos. They think being tired all the time, stressed out, moody, or mentally fogged is just life. But as believers, we’re not called to live by the same rhythm the world does. We are called to be sober-minded, watchful, and filled—not with the counterfeit energy of this world, but with the power of the Holy Spirit and the wisdom God gives.
I didn’t always live this way. I used to survive on caffeine, sugar, and little sleep. I’d push myself past healthy limits in the name of being “productive,” or spiritual, or just getting through the day. But eventually I learned—what you put in your body affects your clarity, your discernment, and even your ability to hear from God.
When Caffeine Became a Counterfeit Anointing
I’ll be honest. I used to think caffeine was no big deal. Everybody drinks it. Some people live off it. But then I started noticing patterns in my own life. When I had too much—especially over 200 mg—I would get anxious, restless, and spiritually off. Sometimes I’d feel like I couldn’t focus in prayer. Other times, I’d feel like I was seeing things or hearing things I had to test. I don’t say that to be dramatic—I say it because it’s true, and most people never connect the dots between their mental state and what they’re putting in their body.
Here’s something crazy: on a brain scan, caffeine, sugar, and even cocaine all light up the brain in almost the same way. They flood your system with dopamine—the “reward” chemical—giving you a temporary high. But it’s false fire. It’s like putting gasoline on a fire when God wanted to breathe life through wind. It’s man-made energy that ends in a crash.
When Your Energy Source Starts Fighting You
See, when you’re caffeine-sensitive (like I am), what others call a boost can actually become a burden. I would feel wired but not truly energized. Alert but not clear. It was like my brain was on overdrive but my spirit was lagging behind. And as someone walking with the Lord, with a calling, a prophetic gift, and a mind that already battles certain things—that kind of stimulation is dangerous.
Caffeine pushed me into places God never led me to. And if I wasn’t careful, I’d mistake adrenaline for anointing. That’s when I realized: the mind of Christ requires real clarity—not artificial energy.
What I Found Instead: Real Fuel
Instead of running to coffee or energy drinks, I started learning how to support my mind the way God designed it. That meant turning to things like:
B12 (specifically Adenosyl B12) – to support clean, stable energy at the cellular level
Folinic Acid – a gentle, effective form of folate that helps your brain process neurotransmitters and your body detox
Water – sounds simple, but dehydration mimics fatigue and confusion
Good fats and minerals – your brain runs on real fuel, not sugar highs
The goal wasn’t just to stop caffeine. The goal was to find a way to be clear-minded and spiritually sensitive without being mentally or emotionally unstable. And this worked. It didn’t come with crashes or spiritual fog. It didn’t hijack my brain—it nourished it. It brought me back into rhythm with how I believe God intended us to live.
Sleep: The Spiritual Discipline Nobody Talks About
Can I be real? Most spiritual people I know don’t sleep right. We stay up late because we feel the presence of God stronger at night. Or we’re interceding, or journaling, or watching another sermon. And while those things can be good, when sleep gets sacrificed consistently, the enemy finds an open door.
Lack of sleep doesn’t just affect your mood—it affects your spiritual discernment. It messes with your perception of reality. I’ve experienced it myself. What I thought were attacks or heavy spiritual atmospheres were sometimes just exhaustion, plain and simple. And the devil loves to use our vulnerabilities. When you’re tired, everything feels louder—anxieties, intrusive thoughts, warfare. Even our emotional stability can feel shaken. That’s not because God left—it’s because we’re drained and trying to fight spiritual battles without rest.
Jesus slept. In the boat, during the storm. Why? Because rest is part of faith. And sometimes our best spiritual warfare is found in simply going to bed. We are not machines—we’re temples. And God cares about the condition of His temple.
Exercise: Not Just for the Body, but for the Mind
I didn’t realize how connected my mind and body were until I started running again. Something happens when you move your body—when you sweat, when you breathe deeply, when you push through. It’s not just physical. It’s mental and spiritual. Exercise helps clear the fog, regulate emotions, and release chemicals that actually help your brain function better—naturally.
I started small. Just walking. Then running. It’s not about becoming a gym rat—it’s about stewarding the vessel God gave me. I noticed that the more I moved, the more energy I had, and the less I needed to rely on caffeine or sugar. I felt grounded again. My thoughts felt slower and more stable. And that made room for the Holy Spirit to speak clearer.
1 Corinthians 9:27 says, “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.” That’s not just about sin. That’s about discipline—about stewardship. I’m learning that you can’t separate your spiritual life from your physical one. You don’t need a perfect body. You need a surrendered one.
Putting It All Together: Temple Living
Let me ask you: What are you running on? Is it peace? Is it rest? Or is it caffeine, sugar, stress, survival?
Romans 12:1 says, “Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.” That includes your brain, your energy levels, your morning routine, your food, your sleep, and your mental clarity.
It’s all worship.
When I stepped away from caffeine, started taking B12 and folinic acid, got better sleep, and moved my body, I didn’t just feel better—I became more present. More discerning. More able to separate the soul from the spirit. More able to walk in wisdom. It’s not just about energy—it’s about alignment.
Final Thoughts: Stop Running on Fumes
There’s a way to live where you’re not always on edge. Not always foggy. Not always needing something to keep you going. It’s not hype—it’s wholeness. It’s not performance—it’s peace. And you can walk in it too.
If your body is the temple, don’t burn it down just to make it through another day. Give it what it needs. And give God space to speak—not just in your spirit, but through your choices, rhythms, and disciplines. Let your energy be from His grace, not man-made adrenaline.
You’ll be shocked what happens when you stop trying to power through and start living from rest.
